Steady On

Season #1

Episode 8: Steady On — Season 1 Finale

You’re waiting for the perfect time to start. But waiting to feel ready is the very thing keeping you from the writing life God called you to. In this Season 1 finale, Becky Meyerson tackles the two most paralyzing forces in a writer’s life — perfectionism and procrastination — and makes the case that you don’t become a writer by preparing to write. You become a writer by writing. Rooted in Hebrews 12:1 and the Greek word apothithemi, this episode calls you to strip off every weight, start before you feel ready, and run the race God set before you. Steady on.

Key Scripture

“Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus.” — Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

The 3 Faces of Procrastination

  • The Perfectionism Loop — waiting for the perfect idea, sentence, or mood; editing instead of moving forward
  • Fear-Based Avoidance — avoiding writing to dodge fear of failure, rejection, or being exposed as an imposter
  • “Productive” Procrastination — substituting emails, admin, or cleaning for the hard mental work of writing

3 Ways to Start Before You Feel Ready

  • Just start. Make a small, imperfect start today — not tomorrow, not after the vacation.
  • Bypass your fears. Your rough draft is supposed to be messy. A consistent writing habit breaks fear’s dominance.
  • Start small. Write one sentence. Your first few words will gradually build into something bigger.

Write On! Step

In your journal, name the specific weight that has been keeping you from writing. Then write this declaration:

Today I choose to strip off __________ and run the race God has set before me. I don’t need to feel ready. I just need to start. So I am starting today.

Then close your journal, open your document, and write one sentence. Just one. Let that be your yes.
