6 Tips For A Stronger Devotional Life

enrich the quality of your life faith how-to's rooted bible reading plans

We all choose what we will add to our daily rhythm of life.

I choose a strong, committed devotional life in God's Word.

I am confident that God's Word planted in my heart has made me the woman I am today.

Making a commitment to time in God's Word isn't easy. Here are 6 tips to empower you.

6 Tips for a Stronger Devotional Life

#1 Identify Your Sacred Space and Time

Our hearts yearn to have a few intimate moments in God’s Word every day, but it is nearly impossible to find such a sanctuary in our everyday lives - unless we are intentional about creating such a space.

Designate a distraction-free space and time where you can spend alone time in God's Word and Presence.

This has to be an intentional move on your part. It does not happen unless you are deliberate and purposeful.

#2 Start Small

Release your grandiose ideas of reading the Bible for 1 hour each day and start with 10 to 15 minutes a day and memorizing only one verse a week.

#3 Let Distractions Go

Remove the noise of distractions

You may have your dedicated area but still be distracted because of the noise from outside and within.

Here are 4 ideas for removing the noise of distractions:

  1. Shut down the electronic and digital triggers that grab your attention.
  2. Get rid of physical clutter.
  3. Redirect your mental nagging to-do list.
  4. Quiet your mind

We are fed messages relentlessly from advertisements on nearly every flat surface. Each distraction enters our mind with one goal: Gain control of our attention and resources. Joshua Becker

#4 Come Closer With Ears Wide Open

There is an intimacy and familiarity that happens in your quiet, sacred spaces with just you and God.

  • You become familiar with sitting quietly.
  • You become comfortable waiting and listening.
  • You learn to tune your ears to hear God’s voice.
  • You become familiar with God’s voice so that even in the middle of a busy, noisy day you can hear him speak.

This intimacy happens when you lean in with your ears wide open to God's voice.

Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life.

Isaiah 55:3 NLT

#5 Don't judge yourself or your time

Not every devotional time is going to be light-bulb moments, bells ringing, discovery, and revelation.

Don't put those kind of expectations on yourself!

Your sacred spaces in God's Word and Presence is a commitment when you offer and God multiplies.

You offer your time and undivided attention and God's Word deposited in you starts to work from the inside out. His Word is alive and active in you whether you feel or see it!

Be diligent in your devotional time, and give yourself grace.

Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life. . . We do not take the spiritual life seriously if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to him. Henry Nouwen

I understand the desire to spend meaningful time in God's Word, but not making the commitment.

I have stood in the same place you are right now.

I used to quickly read through a devotional without really paying attention, and then check Bible reading off my to-do list.

The Rooted -Live Membership is designed with you in mind. The Monday morning email offers a layer of accountability, and the community of women journeying together through the Reading Plan, gives the encouragement you need.

You experience Bible reading not as something you have to dobut a welcome addition to spend time in God's presence.
